Polona Jaki Mekjavić is consultant of ophthalmology in the University Clinical Centre Ljubljana Eye Hospital, and an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Ljubljana Medical Faculty.
Upon receiving her medical degree she participated in research focussing on the effectiveness of autoantibodies in patients with Graves’ orbitopathy. Since then she monitors and treats patients with Graves’ orbitopathy in the only tertiary clinic in Slovenia. Important milestones in her career include a clinical visits to the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London (UK), the Helsinki University Hospital (HUS, Finland) and John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford (UK).
She has organised numerous national and international educational and training workshops for ophthalmologists, and is a mentor of fellows in ophthalmology, and doctoral students. She is also a member of the examining committee of the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO examiner). Her current research also includes diving and hyperbaric physiology, exercise and space life sciences. She participates in clinical research projects dealing with age-related macular degeneration, and autoimmune disease of the thyroid.
