Marija Pfeifer is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the Medical faculty, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She studied, graduated and achieved Master’s and PhD degrees at the Medical Faculty in Ljubljana. Her postgraduate education took place at different institutions in Germany, UK and US. She served as head of the Department of Endocrinology for eight years and as the medical director of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana for two years.
Her main fields of interest are pituitary diseases, especially GHD and atherogenesis; PCOS – metabolic and vascular derangements, obesity and cellular lipid handling; male hypogonadism, LOH in diabetic patients and CVD; osteoporosis and vitamin D. She has authored or co-authored over fifty papers in international peer-reviewed medical journals, has written chapters in textbooks of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and edited the Chapters on Endocrine diseases. She has an h-index of 18, and over 1400 citations. She has lectured endocrinology and has been a mentor to students and postgraduate students. She is a visiting professor at the Medical faculty – University of Zagreb (Croatia) and Medical Faculty – University of Belgrade (Serbia).
She served in the European Society of Endocrinology Executive, Education, Nomination and Congress committees, is the representative of the Slovenian Medical Association in UEMS – Section and Board for Endocrinology, and has been a member of the Programme Organising Committees for ENEA meeting in 2012 and for the ECE 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019. She is an active member of the ESE Postgraduate Courses Steering Committee. She has peer reviewed for EJE, Clinical Endocrinology, JCEM, Frontiers in Endocrinology, and others. She served as a member of the International Advisory Board for Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology and still serves at the Editorial boards of Hormones (Athens), and Frontiers in Endocrinology (Pituitary). She is the president of the Slovenian Endocrine Society and a regular member of the Slovenian Medical Academy.
